In recent decades, the surge of abandoned, feral, and unwanted pets has rightfully garnered sympathy from animal lovers everywhere, including from previously reluctant pet owners. But this sympathy has unfortunately induced unnecessary guilt in potential adopters, making them feel as though the only viable, responsible choice is to adopt a dog from your neighborhood shelter.
Is this true? No, it isn’t. Now, I am not trying to suggest that adopting from the pound or private organizational shelter is not right and proper in some instances, but responsible breeders are not the bad guys like many animal rights activists would have you believe. Why adopt from a breeder? Let me tell you.
If you study the science behind the development of dog breeds, then you know that each breed is susceptible to a specific set of diseases related to their genes. These include hip dysplasia, blood clotting disorders, eye problems, and even the canine equivalent to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
A responsible breeder–classified as a person or persons who understand the breed standard and intentionally pair two dogs of the same breed who are free from disease or carrying genes for certain diseases in addition to amplifying or enhancing desirable characteristics such as size, speed, or a friendly temperament–will make every effort to eliminate threats to puppies’ overall good health.
When you adopt from a reputable breeder, you know that your dog has the best chance of living a happy, healthy life.
If you are planning on using your dog in a working or sporting capacity, then adopting from a breeder is the way to go. As I mentioned, breeders do their best to enhance the dogs’ natural instincts, so whether you are driving cattle on the ranch and need a herder to assist you or you can’t wait to hit the woods during duck season with a great retriever by your side, then contacting a kennel that specializes in maintaining the breed’s original purpose will go a long way.
Peace of mind generally comes from adopting from a top-quality breeder. Why? Because you know that you are supporting someone that treats all their dogs like family–just as they deserve to be treated.
Shelter dogs typically are not abused within the shelter, but many of them come from puppy mills or backyard breeders, and by adopting from the shelter, you are inadvertently supporting these people who do not care about the dogs. Adopting from the pound sends the message that irresponsible people can keep breeding dogs and dumping them when they don’t sell. Do the right thing. Support a responsible breeder.

www.theshelterpetproject.org Pet adoption is on the rise since the campaign’s 2009 launch. Despite a bleak economy, the percentage of pets in homes that were adopted from animal shelters and rescue groups has risen from 27% to 29% in the last two years, and encouraging statistics show that euthanasia of shelter pets is down 10% since 2009. However, 2.7 million healthy and treatable pets are still losing their lives in shelters each year. Bringing that number all the way to zero is the goal of “The Shelter Pet Project” campaign, which aims to encourage millions of pet lovers to make shelters the first choice and desired way for acquiring companion animals. The current phase of the campaign focuses on the bond that exists between a person and their shelter pet and encourages potential adopters to adopt from shelters by explaining that, “A person is the best thing to happen to a shelter pet. Be that person. Adopt.”

There are plenty of people who would adopt the unwanted animals at shelters across the country if they had the space. Families would love to share the childhoods of their children with pets, but they often lack the space that is necessary to comfortably house and care for an animal. Luckily, there are pet solutions for homes of all sizes. Those who are looking for a pet that requires just a small amount of room and limited care and attention may be happy with something in the rodent family. While some people call on exterminating to remove mouse and mice problems, others find that these tiny creatures are ideal for pets. While you may not be able to domesticate a rodent you find roaming your duct system or the attic, you can choose something from the same family at a pet store, create a comfortable cage, and have the perfect small pet. Also, consider hamsters and guinea pigs if you want something from the rodent family that is which is cuddly and cute.
If you or your children have your heart set on a dog, there are a few options that can live comfortably in small spaces.
Consider a breed like Chihuahua or toy Poodle if you are looking for a canine that is small in size and happy to spend most of its time sitting on family laps. Remember though, even if a dog is small, it still needs plenty of attention and outdoor time, so make sure your lifestyle fits a dog’s needs. Even if your space is large enough, your schedule may not be accommodating.
Sometimes families who cannot handle caring for a dog opt to adopt a kitten or cats. Dogs and cats have a lot of similarities when it comes to pet lifestyles, but cats are better for people who lack the time or enthusiasm for taking a dog outside.
Many cats offers as much loyalty and affection as dogs, but they have a spirit of independence that enables you to go on vacation, spend long days at work, and sleep in late on weekend morning. There are cats that can be independent and aloof, but usually if you adopt a cat when they are very young, you can condition them to be affectionate and lovable.
If you still think that an animal running around your living space will make things too cramped, you still have plenty of pet options. Reptiles make great pets and you can confine them to a terrarium without having to worry about health problems and lack of activities. Reptiles are often happy to spend time outside of their living environment and will sit on humans and be social, but they are just as content in their cages or glass enclosures.
Those looking for something a little less lizard-like can set up an aquarium in their home and fill it with colorful fish. Fish are great pets and require very little attention, but at the end of a long day they offer relaxation and companionship. Watching a fish swim in its tank is one of the most soothing forms of meditation there is.

There are numbers of relationships that a human being forms in the entire course of his life. But what matters the most is the quality of the relation that he forms with the people he meets or even with the animals that he owns as pets. And what defines the relationship? On what parameters is the quality of a relationship judged? Well, many of the ancient and the modern day philosophers have tried to answer this evergreen question but till now there has been no finite solution given that would satisfy the general population. The answer to this question can be had or not is still debatable but one thing is for sure, that in this thing called existence there is only one thing that has the potential to forge a strong bond. That thing is the language of love and respect. The same parameter is applicable to the relation between man and an animal. So, if you plan to adopt a pet, then the first thing that you must really understand is that that language less creature deserves the same language of love and respect from you as the others in your circle of known ones
Since time immemorial people have used animals for different purposes. Be it a horse, a cow, a buffalo, a dog or a cat, volumes and volumes have been written on the relationship between the owners and their pets they adopted and the events that showcased the strength of that relation. So, if you are planning to adopt a pet then make sure that you speak the same language of love, respect, and commitment with your pet that you do in your other relations. And your pet, for sure, would speak to you in the same language as you do. Every wagging of his tail, and every round that he takes around your legs would be a testimony to the underlying love and longing that he has for you. So, once that you have decided to adopt a pet then the next best thing is to learn the language that a relationship demands, seeks, and deserves.

I may be a little biased and the pet stores and breeders probably won’t agree with some of these reasons to select adoption over purchasing and breeding. I’m not saying all pet stores are bad and all breeders are bad but I just happen to favor adopting birds from all the adoption and rescue organizations over purchasing from stores and breeders. So if you’re thinking about getting a parrot, consider these reasons for adopting rather than getting a parrot from your local pet store or breeder.
Be a part of the solution. Many people every day purchase a parrot without fulling considering the reasons NOT to purchase a parrot. A pet parrot isn’t for everybody or every lifestyle. Literally 1000′s of unwanted parrots are placed up for adoption and are in need of good homes because the new owner learns that a parrot isn’t compatible with their life. The adoption and rescue organizations have to turn away parrots in need due to the large volume of parrots being given up for adoption. This is a major problem and you adopting a parrot is part of the solution.
Save some cash! Breeders and pet stores often charge premium prices. On the other hand, rescues are usually more interested in finding a good home for a bird than they are in finding a huge profit. Adopting is often less expensive and the parrot frequently comes with a cage and the basic accessories. And if you’re lucky, it will be the same cage and toys that the rescue parrot is currently living with so it will help the parrot transition into it’s new surroundings.
Rescue orgs need your support to continue their support. All that bird food, toys and care for rescue birds has to come from somewhere. If you’ve ever visited a rescue (I’d recommend it) then you probably noticed that it’s probably not a highly profitable operation. It’s often very expensive to operate and most new rescues fail because the costs of operation exceed the income from operations.
Learn a little or a learn a lot. If you’re new to the pet parrot world this is a great opportunity to educate yourself. Rescue personnel are often very knowledgeable and will start you off on the right foot. They’re often a great source of information unlike some of the people at the local pet store. Rescues often offer and provide information, education and training for new adopting ‘parronts’ as a public service.
Are you ready for a parrot? Rescue’s will screen you and inform you about your decision to own a parrot instead of selling you whatever you want. It’s in their best interest to help you become a life long parrot owner instead of someone that will be coming back it a couple weeks to place the parrot up for adoption AGAIN! Take this opportunity to see if you’re ready for taking on this new responsibility.
Stand up and be counted! Cast your vote for the parrots in need! You can do this by using your dollars to cast your vote. Spending money at a pet store supports the sale of parrots at pet stores which takes away from the birds in need of being rescued. Likewise, spending money on wild caught birds and/or breeders supports their methods instead of supporting the parrots in need of being rescued.
These parrots deserve a nice home. Many have spent time in several homes by the time they reach the rescues. Often abused, mistreated or neglected. Take a look at some of the parrots waiting for you to rescue them. Just be prepared for your heart to melt.
Get to know the parrot before you bring it home. You can often spend quality time with the parrot and get to know the parrot before you adopt. In fact, some rescues REQUIRE that you visit numerous times to acquaint yourself with the bird. Visiting 3 or 4 weekends for a couple hours each visit is a great opportunity to see if your ready and to see if that’s the parrot that you really want to adopt.
Want a talking parrot? “Because they talk.” is cited as the number one reason that people select a parrot as a pet. Parrots up for adoption are often mature parrots and you’ll know if this one talks before you adopt it. Despite what some sellers might tell you, not all parrots will talk (not even the good talkers – African Greys). So instead of taking a chance, visit your rescue and see for yourself which ones are the good talkers. One word of caution, if this is the only reason that you’re getting a parrot, then you probably want to reconsider getting a parrot.
“Every charitable act is a stepping stone toward heaven.” That’s true at least according to Henry Ward Beecher (US Congregational minister, 1813-1887). Tap into your charitable soul and do something for a parrot in need. You’ll feel good about yourself, and your new parrot will feel good about finding a caring and stable home.
Hopefully you’ve read this and agree that adoption is something you’re interested in. If you are then here are a few parting words of advice.
Do some research. Make sure you’re ready to get a parrot or another parrot. There are a lot of reasons NOT to get a parrot.
Do some more research. Make sure you check out the rescue organization that you’re considering.
